Dear Students, Families and Staff, 

The first week of the 2026-27 school year is in the books! And what a great start to the school year it was. New students explored their new campuses, and the many existing MIT Middle School students also got to explore a new campus. At Griffin Academy, new and existing students also enjoyed a novel experience - new Site Director, Dr. Charquita Arnold, a new Office Supervisor, Sergio Ortega, and quite a few new teachers. 

The new faces and some new facilities translated into a week of heightened enthusiasm and spirit on both campuses. It was easy to see learning going on in the classrooms, as well as the activities and the reunions of old and new friends on the turf, in the multipurpose rooms, and all over both campuses. 

Employees of the Month

Our successful Employee of the Month recognition program is entering its second year; as the first full month of school, September will be the first month for which we reward employees. Last week, we were able to recognize teachers and staff members who had been voted in by students for last May. We had not had the opportunity to recognize these employees before the school year ended, so we gave them their gift cards and certificates of appreciation at one of the professional development days before school started.

Charter Renewals for MIT High School and Griffin Middle School

Earlier this month, the board of directors of Vallejo City Unified School District rejected our attempt to merge the two Griffin schools and the two MIT schools into two 6-12 programs. The VCUSD board chose not to see the wisdom of our plan to reduce paperwork, leaving us to apply for standard five-year renewals in the coming months. 

Administrators are putting together two lengthy documents, one for each of the two schools that have not been recently renewed: Griffin Academy Middle School and MIT High School. We will submit them to VCUSD in the next month, starting a three-month clock set by state law. We encourage students, parents and teachers to support us when the time comes for our public hearings later this fall.  

Ninety days from the submittal of our charter renewal documents will be around winter break. Once those two schools are renewed, all four of our schools will have earned a five-year renewal, and we will not have to submit another renewal petition until 2028. 

Social Media Attack

This weekend a racist attack against our Director of Schools was posted on TikTok. In an AI-created video. MIT Schools Director Saeteurn was targeted by an MIT student or former student because of her race.

There is no place at Griffin Technology Academies for these kinds of attacks. While the initial post targeted one of our administrators, the next ones could target teachers, other staff and students, either because of their race, their gender identity or anything else.  It is imperative that students, parents and staff help us stop bigoted attacks by reporting anything they see using the StopIt app. If and when we find out who has created this post, we will ensure that the student is properly disciplined. 

August Summer Nights

Many of you already know about the City of Vallejo’s August Summer Nights, now in its third year. For those who do not, there is one more event coming up this Thursday August 27th. Estimados estudiantes, familias y personal:

¡La primera semana del ciclo escolar 2026-27 ha concluido! Y qué gran comienzo de año escolar. Los nuevos estudiantes exploraron sus nuevos campus, y muchos estudiantes de la escuela secundaria MIT también tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer un nuevo campus. En la Academia Griffin, tanto los estudiantes nuevos como los antiguos disfrutaron de una experiencia novedosa: la nueva directora del campus, la Dra. Charquita Arnold, el nuevo supervisor de oficina, Sergio Ortega, y varios profesores nuevos.

Las caras nuevas y algunas instalaciones renovadas se tradujeron en una semana de gran entusiasmo y energía en ambos campus. Era evidente el aprendizaje en las aulas, así como las actividades y los reencuentros de viejos y nuevos amigos en el césped, en las salas de usos múltiples y en todo el campus.

Empleados del mes

Nuestro exitoso programa de reconocimiento al Empleado del Mes entra en su segundo año; septiembre, el primer mes completo del ciclo escolar, será el primer mes en el que premiaremos a nuestros empleados. La semana pasada, pudimos reconocer a los maestros y miembros del personal que fueron elegidos por los estudiantes en mayo. No habíamos tenido la oportunidad de reconocer a estos empleados antes de que terminara el ciclo escolar, así que les entregamos sus tarjetas de regalo y certificados de agradecimiento durante una de las jornadas de desarrollo profesional previas al inicio de clases.

Abajo: Marvin Supan, profesor de matemáticas de la escuela secundaria Griffin, y Eduardo Martínez, profesor de inglés de la escuela intermedia, obtuvieron la mayor cantidad de votos en cada una de las dos escuelas de Griffin.

Arriba: Gabriel Neustadt, entrenador y profesor de educación física; Jerick Garcia , entrenador y responsable de servicios de nutrición.   Los ganadores provenían de las escuelas secundarias y preparatorias del MIT.

Renovación de los estatutos de la escuela secundaria MIT y la escuela intermedia Griffin.

A principios de este mes, la junta directiva del Distrito Escolar Unificado de la Ciudad de Vallejo rechazó nuestra propuesta de fusionar las dos escuelas Griffin y las dos escuelas MIT en dos programas para los grados 6 a 12. La junta del VCUSD no consideró viable nuestro plan para reducir el papeleo, por lo que tendremos que solicitar renovaciones quinquenales estándar en los próximos meses.

Los administradores están preparando dos extensos documentos, uno para cada una de las dos escuelas que no han sido renovadas recientemente: la escuela secundaria Griffin Academy y la preparatoria MIT. Los presentaremos al Distrito Escolar Unificado de Valley (VCUSD) el próximo mes, dando inicio al plazo de tres meses establecido por la ley estatal. Invitamos a estudiantes, padres y maestros a que nos apoyen cuando llegue el momento de nuestras audiencias públicas a finales de este otoño.

Noventa días después de la presentación de los documentos para la renovación de nuestra licencia, coincidiremos con las vacaciones de invierno. Una vez que se renueven esas dos escuelas, nuestras cuatro escuelas habrán obtenido una renovación de cinco años y no tendremos que presentar otra solicitud de renovación hasta 2028.

Ataque en las redes sociales

Este fin de semana, se publicó en TikTok un ataque racista contra nuestra Directora de Escuelas. En un video creado con inteligencia artificial, la Directora de Escuelas del MIT, Saeteurn, fue atacada por un estudiante o exalumno del MIT debido a su raza.

En Griffin Technology Academies no hay lugar para este tipo de ataques. Si bien la publicación inicial iba dirigida a uno de nuestros administradores, las siguientes podrían ir dirigidas a profesores, personal administrativo y estudiantes, ya sea por su raza, identidad de género o cualquier otro motivo. Es fundamental que estudiantes, padres y personal administrativo nos ayuden a detener los ataques discriminatorios denunciando cualquier contenido que vean a través de la aplicación StopIt. Si descubrimos quién creó esta publicación, nos aseguraremos de que el estudiante reciba la sanción disciplinaria correspondiente.

Noches de verano de agosto

Este jueves, anímense a pasear por Georgia Street con otras familias del área metropolitana de Toronto y residentes de Vallejo. Muchos ya conocen las Noches de Verano de la ciudad de Vallejo, que este año celebran su tercera edición. Para quienes no las conozcan, este jueves 27 de agosto habrá un evento más.
